I strive to be a teacher that inspires my students and instills the love of art and dance. My values of inclusion, community, individuality, and personal expression are incredibly important to me. I aim to create spaces where my students feel comfortable to be themselves. Additionally, I desire to create a community within my classroom where students feel supported and encouraged by the instructor and each other. Creativity and personal expression are learned skills, they are built almost as easily as they are torn down. Supporting and cultivating their creativity and personal expression in educational settings is effective in instilling those values at a young age. If my students are comfortable and feel supported, they will be able to learn and explore dance successfully, in whichever way you choose to define success. I intend to aid in growing my students’ creativity, individuality, and personal expression through their dance training.
My teaching style focuses on creative exploration and learning by doing. Dance is an artform that can only grow as the practitioners grow. Growth can only occur when artists are curious and exploratory. The constant curiosity and desire to explore are characteristics I aim to instill in my students. Not only will these values help my students continue to explore their own personal artistic expression but will help the artform grow. Dance is often problem solving, and giving students opportunities to practice their art and solve these problems is essential to them growing as people. I teach because I want my students to find themselves through dance. Overall, I desire for my students to see the world holistically through their art.
